Appeals to the significance of a culture, tradition, or way life can simultaneously edify and alienate different audiences as they serve an identity-forming other-excluding function. The imaginary that some cultures are civilized complex others natural simple has been complexly mediated through historical entanglements interactions between, on one hand, colonialism Eurocentrism and, other, varieties anti-colonial resistance postcolonial formation contemporary national, cultural, religious identities.
